The Ultimate Guide to Using FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola Blend Bedding for the Deep Litter Method!

Michelle Zimmer

For all our backyard chicken keepers, here’s a game-changing guide to keep your coop fresh, warm, and low-maintenance all season long! The Deep Litter Method is a natural composting system in your coop, where you let bedding break down gradually over time.

With FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola Blend Bedding, you’ll have the ideal materials to make this method even easier, less odor and more effective, especially during the chilly Minnesota fall and winter months!

Why Choose the Deep Litter Method?

  • Insulation: The bedding acts as natural insulation, keeping your chickens cozy in winter.
  • Odor Control: The natural absorbency of FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola keeps odors low with the hemp pellets that capture unwanted smells!
  • Time-Saving: No need to clean out the coop weekly—just add more bedding as needed.
  • Moisture Control: Hemp is magical when it comes to absorbing moisture and humidity in the coop!
  • Composting: At the end of the season, you’ll have compost ready for the garden!

Step-by-Step Deep Litter Method Using FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola Blend Bedding

  1. Prep Your Coop:

    • Clean out any existing bedding and scrub down surfaces if needed.
    • Ensure the coop floor is dry before adding your first layer.
  2. Start with a 4–6 Inch Base Layer:

    • Add 4–6 inches of FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola Blend Bedding to the entire floor of your coop. This blend’s high absorbency will trap moisture, reducing odors and controlling humidity.
  3. Add Bedding Weekly:

    • Each week, add another 1 inch or so, of bedding on top of the old layer. This “freshens up” the coop and keeps your chickens’ environment clean and cozy.
    • Tip: Sprinkle a bit of barn lime over the old poo, then fresh bedding, as you add layers to mix droppings and bedding evenly for natural composting.
  4. Keep an Eye on Moisture:

    • The bedding should remain dry to the touch, even on the bottom layer. If it feels damp, add another 1–2 inches of bedding and increase ventilation if possible.
  5. Monthly Fluffing:

    • About once a month, use a rake to fluff the bedding and break up any compacted spots. This promotes air circulation and speeds up the composting process, which generates warmth naturally.
  6. Spring Clean-Out:

    • In the spring, remove all the bedding and use it as compost in your garden. FLAX FARMS Hemp & Canola Blend composts beautifully into nutrient-rich soil that’s great for plants!

How Much Bedding Will You Need?

Here’s a quick estimate based on coop size and starting layer depth:

  • Small Coop (3x3 feet): Start with ~1/2 to 1 bag (4-6 inches deep) and add 1/4 bag weekly.
  • Medium Coop (4x6 feet): Start with ~2 bags and add 1/2 bag weekly.
  • Large Coop (6x10 feet): Start with ~4 bags and add 1 bag weekly.

Each bag is designed to cover around 10-12 square feet at a depth of 4-6 inches.
