Lawn Care & Fencing FAQs
What's the best fencing to keep chickens in and predators out?
Hardware cloth with ½-inch openings is the gold standard for predator-proofing a chicken run. Unlike chicken wire, which is designed to keep chickens in but not predators out, hardware cloth is strong enough to resist raccoons, foxes, and weasels. Bury it at least 12 inches underground or bend it outward in an L-shape at the base to prevent digging predators from getting under.
How do I keep chickens out of my garden?
Garden netting or low poultry fencing around garden beds is the most effective solution. Chickens are persistent foragers — they'll scratch up seedlings, eat greens, and dust bathe in loose soil given the chance. A 2–3 foot fence is usually enough to deter most breeds, though determined birds may need taller barriers or overhead netting to keep them out completely.
Is barn lime safe to use in a chicken run?
Hydrated barn lime (calcium hydroxide) should be used carefully — it's caustic and can irritate skin, eyes, and respiratory systems if birds or people are exposed to it directly. Apply it to the bare ground of a run, let it dry completely, then cover with fresh bedding before returning birds. First Saturday Lime is a safer, food-grade alternative that can be used more freely around birds and is also effective as an insect deterrent.
How do I control weeds and pests in my yard without harming my flock?
Chickens are sensitive to many conventional pesticides and herbicides — keep birds off treated areas until products are fully dry and follow label directions carefully. First Saturday Lime is a bird-safe option for pest control in runs and yard areas. Diatomaceous earth can be used in dry areas for insect control. For lawn care near free-ranging flocks, look for organic or pet-safe labeled products and apply when birds are confined.
