Collection: Pest Control
Protect your flock, coop, and property from pests of all kinds!
Bloomington Farm & Feed's Pest Control collection covers every threat — from external parasites like mites, lice, and scaly leg mites (treated with Ivermectin, Permethrin, Elector PSP, and our herbal Savealeg salve), to internal parasites with dewormers like Safe-Guard and Ivermectin paste.
Fight flies naturally or chemically with sticky traps, biting fly repellent, and insecticide spray, and keep your coop environment hostile to pests with diatomaceous earth, First Saturday Lime, and Gardstar poultry dust.
Rodent problems? We carry both live-catch and snap traps for mice and rats. Plus a pump sprayer and garden netting to complete your pest management setup.
Natural options alongside conventional treatments — so you can choose what's right for your flock.
Pest Control FAQs
How do I know if my chickens have mites or lice?
Check your birds at night when mites are most active — part the feathers near the vent, under the wings, and around the neck. Red or black specks moving on the skin are mites; yellowish or whitish clusters at the base of feathers are lice eggs. Signs of infestation include feather loss, pale combs, restlessness at night, reduced egg production, and birds that seem to scratch or preen excessively.
What's the difference between mites and lice in chickens?
Lice live their entire life cycle on the bird and feed on feather debris and skin scales — they're irritating but less dangerous than mites. Red mites (the most common in Minnesota coops) live in coop crevices during the day and feed on birds at night, which can cause anemia and even death in severe infestations. Northern fowl mites live on the bird full-time and are active year-round.
How do I treat and prevent worms in chickens?
Chickens can carry several types of internal parasites including roundworms, cecal worms, and capillary worms. Signs include weight loss, diarrhea, pale yolks, and reduced egg production. Safe-Guard (fenbendazole) and Ivermectin are the most commonly used dewormers for backyard flocks. Rotate pasture access, keep feeders off the ground, and practice good coop hygiene to reduce reinfection risk.
How do I keep rodents out of my chicken coop?
Rodents are attracted to spilled feed and warm shelter. Store feed in sealed metal containers, clean up spills promptly, and avoid leaving feeders out overnight. Hardware cloth (not chicken wire) with ½-inch openings is the most effective barrier for coop construction. For active infestations, snap traps placed along walls and in corners are the most effective control method — use live traps if you prefer a catch-and-release approach.
Is diatomaceous earth effective for pest control in the coop?
Food-grade diatomaceous earth (DE) is effective as a preventive and mild treatment for external parasites when applied to bedding, dust bath areas, and coop surfaces. It works mechanically by damaging insect exoskeletons, so it doesn't create chemical resistance. It's less effective against heavy infestations — for those, use permethrin-based products and treat both birds and coop simultaneously. Always use food-grade DE, not pool-grade.
