Bag Balm® enables rapid healing of dry, frost bit and/or chapped skin conditions (of both animals and humans)and superficial abrasions, that will not freeze in the winter.
Since 1899, Bag Balm® has been the farmer's friend, helping to protect from the harsh environment of cold climates. It's use has become more widespread since it has lanolin, wax and antiseptic ingredients mixed into the salve.
Bag Balm can be very helpful for protecting your chickens and other poultry during cold winter months. Here are the main ways it can be used:
Preventing Frostbite
- Apply Bag Balm to exposed areas like combs and wattles to create a protective barrier against freezing temperatures
- The thick salve helps prevent moisture from freezing on these delicate tissues
- Regular application is recommended before severe cold snaps
Treating Foot Issues
- For chickens with cold-damaged feet, you can:
- Soak their feet in warm Epsom salt water for about 20 minutes
- Dry the feet thoroughly
- Apply an antibiotic ointment like Neosporin (if there are wounds)
- Coat with Bag Balm as a protective layer
Benefits of Bag Balm for Poultry
- Creates a moisture barrier on exposed skin
- Contains menthol which can increase circulation and promote healing
- Helps prevent cracking and tissue damage from extreme cold
- Easy to apply and generally safe for poultry
For best results, apply Bag Balm before temperatures drop significantly and reapply as needed throughout the winter months, especially before extreme cold weather events.
